It is primarily bcause runoff from the rain washes sediment into the river.

Rain disturbes the silt at the bottom and causes it to rise in the water amking the murky-brown colour.
The Mississippi River floods its banks usually due to the heavy rain that part of the US has. Take the flood in 1993 for example. In April 1993 the drainage basin around the Mississppi had become saturated due to heavy rain. Thunderstorms and flash floods in June caused rapid surface run off and in turn flash floods. Then when 180 mm of rain fell in a few hours the towns surrounding the Mississippi River built levees so this wouldn't happen again.
Heavy rain becomes a thunderstorm when there is thunder and lightning. This usually happens when the clouds reach a significant enough height and the updraft becomes strong enough to separated electrical charges.

TOXIC CHEMICAL SPILLED --------------------------------- Wrong! The Ohio river turns brown when it's carrying a lot of silt. (soil) A heavy rain upstream is usually all it takes to turn it brown. Look for more debris and snags in the water at the same time.
It could be industrial pollution. Or it could be that the river is cloudy with a mixture of yellow sand and silt washed down after heavy rains further up stream.
It evaporates and turns into clouds. Once heavy enough, it can turn into rain, snow or some other form of condensation.
Synthetic can be mixed with regular oil without issue. It will not turn it muddy. Muddy oil is normally caused be very old oil, sludge or water in the oil. Your oil needs to be changed every 25 hrs of runtime or each season, whichever comes first.
