Ariboflavinosis
Ariboflavinosis results from deficiency of riboflavin (vitamin B2). Ariboflavinosis is commonly seen in association with protein-energy malnutrition due to either malnourishment or chronic alcoholism. More specifically riboflavin deficiency occurs due inadequate diet with limited quantities of riboflavin-containing foods such as meats, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, leafy green vegetables and whole grains. Riboflavin deficiency can also occur in those with impaired liver function most commonly due to chronic alcoholism, preventing proper metabolism of this vitamin in the liver. Milder symptoms of riboflavin deficiency are seen, in those who are on anti-retroviral medications. Treatment of ariboflavinosis requires consumption of large quantities of Vitamin B2 containing products (meats, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, leafy green vegetables and whole grains). Prevention requires multivitamin supplements as a daily capsule containing riboflavin ranging from 1.1 to 1.3 milligrams. Pregnant and lactating mothers should take 1.6 mg/day.
Riboflavin deficiency can be treated with supplemental riboflavin (0.5 mg/kg body weight per day) until the symptoms disappear.
Many of the early-stage deficiency symptoms for riboflavin involve eye-related problems. These problems include excessive sensitivity to light, tearing, burning and itching in and around the eyes, and loss of clear vision.
