Buses and lorries are so heavy that it's starting to become difficult and expensive to have the steering wheels also work as drive wheels, so they usually settle for only having the simpler rear axle as drive wheels.

Where is the axle located?

The drive axle's location depends on whether the automobile is front or rear-wheel drive. It is somewhat more complex than a dead axle because it comes in two halves, with a multi-ended joint connecting the two. This joint is called a constant velocity or CV joint. It connects to the driveshaft, a rod which extends from the automobile's transmission, which is connected to the automobile's engine. As the driveshaft turns, the motion is transferred to the drive axles via the CV joint. This causes the wheels connected to the ends of the axle to turn. While 4-wheel drive vehicles have two drive axles, all automobiles must have at least one drive axle to function.

Why is tire made of rubber and not of steel?

Tyre is so smooth but steel is noy smooth and it can never smooth another reason steel may diffuse rapidly as compare to tyre Radial tyres may also have compoments of steel. Michelin, in 1946, made a revolution with their inovative series of «X» type tyres, which included a kind of «steel network» inside the rubber. This tyre was developed for the front-wheel-drive for the Citroen Traction limousines. Otherwise, the tradicional diagonal tyres would not survivelond in front-wheel drive cars.

What is the working principle of differential engine?

A differential in an automobile is used to transfer the power to rear drive axles from the transmission in rear wheel drive vehicles. In 4-wheel drive, the two differentials transfer power from the transfer case to the wheels. Most front wheel drive vehicles use a transaxle which combines a transmission and differential in the same case. Again, one of the roles is to transfer power to the wheels. However, it does more than that. It allows one wheel in the set to turn faster than the other. That is so the vehicle can negotiate curves without skidding.

Very much depends on the capabilities of the drive. Most drives will tell you in the manual. Or you can look up the drive on the manufacturer's website and check there. Some drives will have a DVD+/-DL on the front, if it says "DL" it can handle dual layers.

Is there a drive shaft in a 98 Pontiac Sunfire?

No there are Cv joints which connect directly from the tranny to the front wheels and act as drive shafts. Most rear wheel drives will have drive shafts as to connect from front to back. The reason CV's must be used in front wheel drive is because of the wheels being used for turning. If it was a drive shaft to the wheels, they would not be able to move.
