No the above is not my answer. The answer is that it is our heritage from when we were single cells instead of multi cellular creatures. The basis function of life is to copy. This copy function is very strongly incorporated in DNA/RNA by the billions of years that past before multicellular life started. Then when cells started to work together, and cells became specialized cells, it became important to control the copy function. Because it was not good for the survival of the creature as a whole to have specialised cells in it's body that kept on growing and dividing. Cells started communication between each other to tell each other which function they would do and when to divide and when to die. Then also mechanisms arise to keep the copy function of DNA in control. But it's copy function is so much more strongly incorporated by the many more years of existence in single cellular life, that if the mechanism to control dividing fails it falls back to it's main function which is dividing, and then you got uncontrolled dividing which is cancer. DNA is damaged all the time of it's existence and therefore repair mechanisms exists today but the scars will not go away. DNA will wear out and then the dividing control will fail first. Therefore old creatures have bigger chance to have cancer.
