Dieppe taught the Allies that heavy air and strong sea support would be required for any future invasion in of France. Some historians think that the lessons learned in Dieppe saved lives on the beaches of Normandy later on. :)

Also significant was the break-up of the British Empire, which led to a post-war future (with more independent nations in the Middle East and beyond) that few could have predicted once hostilities began.
Both, Hitler calculated correctly that France & Britain would not interfere. France & Britain had lost their joint resolve to prevent this action. Eventually any German leader would have forced the French & British to back-down on the demilitarization of the Rhineland. However, Hitler did this unilaterally & in a surprise action without negotiating with the French or British. This is an early indicator of the methods that Hitler will use in the future.
To try and prevent future world wars from occurring. WWI was so terrible that people wanted it to be the "war to end all wars". The Great Depression, the rise of fascism, the failure of the League of Nations to respond to Japan's invasion of Manchuria and China all resulted in the League of Nations failing in it's main goal to prevent another world war.
General (future President) Eisenhower was commander of the entire Allied operation. The Normandy invasion was not a solo American operation. Britain and allied forces all contributed. . The overall tactical commanders for the invasion forces were British General Montgomery for the British and Canadian elements and General Omar Bradley for the Americans
