the same reason that high schools have bullies. sometimes, the "popular people" just don't like you. you may be considered weird or different and people will make fun of you for it.

I have been in education at the college and university for over 28 years. While there may be some rare occasions of bullying, I have not seen it within the institution. A: Yes, there have been head teachers demoted or kicked out for bullying their staff. There have been teachers lose their jobs for bullying, or for tolerating bullying. Whenever there are people with authority, there are some who take advantage of it.
I don't know who is making the assertion that bullying doesn't occur in college but it does. Bullying occurs in all walks of life and at all stages.

There are lots of universities that no longer exist in the US. Some include Augusta College, Leland College, and Kensington University.
Most people might think the former bully's have grown up. Which in reality some haven't. If you or a friend is having trouble with this tell a professor. Or make sure they can see it happen.
