∙ 13y agoYou only have to do this for some of the old domains which do not support being able to just show the domain and the extension.
Nowadays you do not have to put this may lead to the page returning an error page.
Some websites like Google and Facebook prefer to show their www. in front of their domain and so links to the domain without www. will be forwarded to the domain www.domain.com.
An example of a domain with and without the ability to show www. would be:
