After the rebellion ends at the barricade, Marius is rescued, restored to health, and marries Cosette.

At the end of the story, Valjean dies of age.

This happens in both the book and the musical adaptation.

Depending on the adaptation, it is a little more complicated than that. I just got done with the 1460-page book.

In Les Misérables, many characters die at the end due to the tumultuous historical and social context of post-revolutionary France. The deaths serve to illustrate themes of redemption, sacrifice, and the price of revolution. Additionally, the deaths contribute to the overall tragic nature of the story, highlighting the struggles and injustices faced by the characters.

Not everyone died. If you go by the movie or the plays, you are following Jean Valjean as he dies and is reunited with people from his past. This is to show that their souls are at peace now.
