The Human body needs to overcome gravity, and other external forces in order to move. In order to do this work, every cell involved must produce energy. This energy is produced by converting molecules in the body to other substances though the breaking of high energy bonds. In order to create the high energy bonds in the first place each cell must use what is called the Electron transport chain. This requires Oxygen, and so as your body needs to create energy at a faster rate as you use it up during exercise you must breath quicker in order to meet the demand
