The answer to this questions varies slightly by what the goat is being kept for. If it is meat goat, then the requirements are different. If it is a pet or backyard lawn mower or dairy goat then he/she will need room to stretch and wander. This space does not need to huge, for a large 180 poung goat, a 20 ft by 20ft enclosure would be nice, but you could get a away with some a little less (but not less than 15 by 10 feet. Goats in small places is not a great idea for long term, especially for larger breeds. They get bored in small spaces and begin "testing" the fence. A determined goat that is a larger breed can get over a 6 ft fence if it is determined enough. Goats need minerals, especially for copper. DO NOT feed them general livestock mineral is MUST be for goats. Goats have a very fragile digestive system, one hiccup can kill them. They will need to be wormed regularly(but make sure you use use the kind ONLY FOR GOATS, there are lots out there that say something like : for goats, sheep, cattle ect. do not use them) If you have a lactating female you will need something like ProBios a supplement that will help her stay healthy. Goats need special feed, formulated just for them. You will want to look at the analysis sheet attached to the feed bag and look for protein between 14% and 16%--if it is a she, and she is lactating you will need 16% protein. Also, Goats need roughage, provide meadow hay or top quality alfalfa (top quality just means that the alfalfa is completely green, with no golden section on the bale). Goats hooves need to be trimmed with special clippers designed for the task. Their hooves need to be trimmed every month to 2 months, depending on how fast they grow. Goats also need vaccines like GOAT CDT, check to see which vac.'s you goats has had and update annually or every two years as required. Goats need fresh water so replace daily. Goats do not like to eat off of the ground, so invest or build a manger style feeder than lifts their feed of the ground, much like those elevated dog feeding stations (minus the water bowl of course). Goats are very social, interact with them regularly by brushing them, and taking them for walks with a halter or collar and leash. Goats hate baths, so try to avoid them getting very dirty , ie if there is a mud hole in their pasture yard, fill it with dirt or rock. Hope this helps. Also, for the best in goat supplies (from vaccines, wormers, feed and LOTS of care info) go to caprinesupply.com (No i am not affiliated with them, I am just a proud and protective goat owner who is thankful for their knowledgeable services)
