If we are talking about during summer, there are two reasons for this. First of all, Hawaii is significantly closer to the equator than the mainland US. And the closer you are to the equator, the shorter the days are in summer (although they will be longer in winter). Secondly, Hawaii does not observe daylight savings time. This means that it will get darker an hour earlier local time than it would in a place of similar latitude that does observe daylight savings time. As a result of these two factors (latitude and lack of daylight savings time), the sun typically sets about an hour and twenty minutes earlier local time on the longest day of the year in Honolulu than in San Francisco.
