Could be several reasons but we really need to know the year, make and model of your vehicle to help you.

If you have the lack of heat in your vehicle start by checking the heat core
Could be the thermostat is upside-down, or maybe the thermostat needs to be replaced. Could also be air in the system.
If your engine takes a much longer time for the thermostat heat guage to reach its required level of operatiing temperature then the thermostat may be stuck in the open position which means that it will need to be replaced.
