in the wild food is hard to come by and since they would eat insects and bugs they face contest from other animals such as lizards they have evolved to have this feeding pattern its really just like hiding it from others

I had this problem with my hamster. I started hand feeding him and then that was all he could do. The hamster has got used to being hand fed. There is not alot you can do to change that now.

Most hamsters are nocturnal, so unless you're are up all night, you would not see your hamster eating.
