This is a safety measure. It preculdes the mechanic being harmed by someone turing the ignityion while the engine is being srived. Two, it protects the engine from being run with no or little oil.
This is similar tot he lockouts used by electrical ina plant. The use locks and tags to keep power from being turned on while they are working on a circuit.
AS MY WIFE SAYS : TURN ON THE IGNITION KEY (DO NOT START THE ENGINE) PRESS 3 TIMES THE GAS PEDAL THEN YOU WILL SEE THAT THE CHANGE OIL LIGHT STARTS FLASHING THEN TURN OFF THE IGNITION KEY.

FIAT 500 and Dodge Grand Caravan: To reset the 'Change Engine Oil' indicator after an oil change: Turn the ignition key to "on" without starting the engine. Depress the accelerator pedal fully 3 times within 10 seconds. Turn the ignition key "off". BTW: It's on page 143 of the owner's manual.
With the ignition key off, press and hold the odometer reset button, and turn the ignition on and do not start the car. In about 2 seconds the light will reset.
Turn the ignition key to the ON position (don't start the engine) and pump the accelerator three times within 10 seconds. Turn the key to OFF. That will reset the message.
If you mean the change engine oil light, and if your truck is like mine,then you turn the ignition key to the on position,(don't start truck), and step on the accelerator three times, then turn the key off. The light sould be gone after that.
If you look in the area of the light, under the speedometer, you'll see a small hole. Put your ignition key in there and turn it to reset the oil change light

Turn on the ignition (switch). Depress and release the accelerator pedal three times within five - ten seconds. Turn off the ignition. Start the car; the change oil light should only light up during the self test. The mileage interval since the last reset will activate the change oil light. If you want to use the change oil light as your reminder for service, repeat this process immediately after an oil change.
