Meiosis is also called reduction division, because the result of meiosis is the production of cells with half the chromosome number of the parent cell (ie haploid cells). This is necessary so that when two gametes fuse during fertilization, the normal chromosome number is restored (ie a diploid cell).

If the chromosome number was not halved during gamete (germ cell) formation, the number would be doubled every time fertilization happened.

Somatic (body) cells do not undergo meiosis because the products of their division will not take part in fertilization. They divide by mitosis, which produces daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes as the parental cell. Mitosis occurs during growth, replacing damaged cells and asexual reproduction.

Meiosis occurs in sex cells because sex cells must end up with half the number of chromosomes as normal cells after division.

Since mitosis produces 2 identical cells with the normal amount of chromosomes, a different process is needed in order to produce 4 genetically different cells with half the number of chromosomes as normal cells. This process is called meiosis.

it is so as in meiosis total no. of chromosomes reduced to half which is only required in sex cells not in somatic cells.Somatic cells have to copy as a whole so that the baby contains all the characteristics of his parents(which character is expressed is a total matter of chance),while in sex chromosomes both parents contribute equally.

bcaze to become different from their parents meiosis occurs only in reproductive cells or known as the germs cells. if it occurss in mitosis then a person would have a body of different lenght ie.hand legs and even the eyes. this would only occur when random fusion of gamestes and division if zygote takes place

Gametes are SEX CELLS-

Meiosis divides the sex cells... and mitosis divides somatic cells

How does the function of mitosis differ from the function of meiosis?

Mitosis makes new cells that are used during growth, development, repair, and asexual reproduction. Meiosis makes cells that enable an organism to reproduce sexually and happens only in reproductive structures.

What is the importance of meiosis in sexually reproductive organism?

Meiosis is still important for the regrowth of cells in a sexually reproductive organism. For example even thought humans reproduce sexually they still have skin cells, like hair, finger nails, and even normal skin that produces new cells by meiosis.

Where does meiosis occur?

It is one of the following all of the cells of an organism a reproductive cell a developing embro plants only the liver

What is the mitosis dividing cell?

Every cell, except reproductive cells, in any living organism divide through mitosis. Reproductive cells divide through meiosis.

What type of cells does meiosis occur in?

Meiosis occurs in gametes or reproductive cells.

What boby cells undergo meiosis?

Body cells do not undergo meiosis. Reproductive cells undergo meiosis, body cells, mitosis.

What kinds of cells are produces from meiosis?

Meiosis is a special kind of cell division that produces haploid (1n) cells. During meiosis, a single cell goes through two cell divisions (meiosis I and meiosis II.) Meiosis takes place only in the reproductive tissues of an organism.

What reproductive cells?

mitosis and meiosis

What cells are affected by meiosis?

generative or reproductive cells

Meiosis makes what kind of cells?

Meiosis makes haploid cells that are different to each other and the parent cell. Meiosis is a type of cell division used for sexual reproduction and to create gametes.

Cells are divided by what process?

mitosis or meiosis for reproductive cells.

What is the process in which reproductive cells are form?

Meiosis
