Look pal, you've got two perspectives to look at: The good side and the bad side. Why is it that people always choose to look at the bad one? Is it fun being the victim all the time or something?
Instead of focusing on what makes your life suck, why not focus on what makes your life good? Either way, you're gonna have to focus on one or the other. Why not choose the one that makes you happier?
Lastly, what do you mean by "modern life"? It's not like in 1950's everything was jolly and we all lived on Candy Mountain. If anything, life gets better overtime as we learn more from our mistakes as a human race. People have been saying we're headed for hell since the beginning of time and we still aren't there yet. If anything it would suck to go back in time.
Less technology, people were 1000 times more ignorant about other ethnicities, no cure for Polio, the entire world was at war, etc...
Put the razor blade down, pick your head up, and take a look around. Life isn't as bad as you think.
Sin does cause suffering. Not only does it goes suffering in your physical life, but it causes suffering in your spiritual life. When someone sins they are pushing their relationship with God away in their spiritual life. In physical life, sin could cause family problems, and cause someone to suffer in relationships with family, friends, anybody. So when you sin it is very important to ask God for forgiveness. Its not a must, but it will help you in your life.

If the cause is desire then the end of suffering is the end of desire. The Noble Truths then suggest that following the Eightfold paths the road to ending desire.

You can ruin a person's life if you do things to them that cause them great pain and suffering. Sometimes a person cannot recover from things.
