Why does my Air conditioner and fan does not work in my 1999 VW passat?

Hi, I have had the same problem with my '98 Passat. The cause is probably a failure in the thermo-fan coil or circuit. When the thermo-fan is broken, the air conditioning will be overloaded due to the lack of airflow and will cut out. I have found that if the air conditioning system has been recently re-gassed, it will work during highway driving, but not during low speed driving while there is no airflow.
I'd suggest fixing the thermo-fan first, then re-gassing the air con, see how you go from there!
