Best Answer

Could be:

Coolant low or no longer any good

Radiator cap seal failure (leaking coolant and system unable to pressurize)

Air in the coolant

Thermostat failure or installed backward

Old Hoses(age making them weak so they constrict under pressure)

Water pump failure

Fan Clutch failure or a failed electric temp control switch, depends on what type you have.

Clogged(even partially) radiator

False positive reading on the temp sensor

Serpentine belt misrouted turning your water pump backward

Sometimes running it hot blows a head gasket which further causes overheating - in this case coolant and oil will mix resulting in white film under your oil cap often thick white smoke from your exhaust.
