there might be something electricaly interfering with the CD and the player. my freind has a psp, that when yo shake itor smack the back of it, it will go black.
Take off the dash then you need to unscrew the CD player then pull out the harness from the back of the CD player, then just pull it out
They are a DIN and a half, You need a single DIN dash kit to put in an aftermarket CD Player.
If the guage itself is broken it will have to be replaced, possibly part of the dash cluster. Might be easier to install an aftermarket guage in the dash and don't worry about the original guage. Aftermarket guages are better as they actually give you a temperature number instead of a "normal" area on the guage and you have to guess what it actually is.
You have 2 options. You can enlarge the the factory mounting area by cutting it to fit with a hacksaw or mount it under the dash.

If you're looking to install an aftermarket stereo system then you need to purchase a dash install kit. You can pick them up at Walmart if need be, they're about $20. The dash install kit comes with instructions for how to safely remove the factory stereo and install the aftermarket one.*If you want to keep some of the safety features, such as the "dinging when you manually turn on the driving lights and turn the car off" you'll need to pick up the wiring kit to go with the dash install kit.

Check your fuses I recently installed an aftermarket stereo and had the problem of the unit turning on and off repeatedly. The factory ground wire was to thin/weak. I grounded my new unit directly to some metal that was inside the dash where the stereo was to be mounted. It worked well and stayed on after that.
