There may be a lot of other reasons why your dog growls at people who touch you but here are the one's I can think of right now

Your dog sees you as part of his pack, and no one else. In other words, he sees you as the alpha and more then likely sees himself as beta. Everybody else is an outsider, and when one of them touches you,s/ he may think they are threatening you, and he goes to 'protect his alpha'

Your dog sees you as a puppy... maybe even his/hers puppy. I guess you can see why he/she would growl in this case.

Your dog may veiw YOU as Beta and HIM/HER as alpha and may be thinking that the person is trying to steal you into their pack.

It could be a variety of reasons. You may be hurting him. He may be showing aggression. It is hard to give a concrete answer without knowing the entire situation. It would be recommended that you quit doing it though. You may want to take him to the vet and explain the situation.

Why is your border terrier acting strange?

This is the sign of a dog in a bad mood! If the dog growls at you when you pet him, you should not just pet him, but approach him carefully and gently show him your hand. If he does not growl, try petting him gently on the back and see his reaction. If he still growls, your dog may be sad and you should take him to a vet to get it confirmed or denied or find out if anything's wrong. The dog might also have trust issues for some reason. But do not count on this, though.

When a dog makes a low growl you say it?

The right tone of voice when a dog is growling will either make it calm down or stop. If not working and the dog attacks, I suggest that you can dominate your dog by going up to him right after he attacks and put your hands behind you while you move toward your dog. If this doesn't work, consult with your local vet or pet trainer.
