Digging is usually from boredom or anxiety. Goldies are extremely social dogs that get stressed when they aren't with their pack (you). It's the downside to the trait that makes them such great family pets.
I'm guessing the dog spends the day alone in the yard while you're at work ?
I'd suggest have a friend (or a service) come in during the day to exercise the dog.
Goldies are also prone to putting on weight if they aren't exercised because you've seen how much they like food...
