Your hermit crab is probably slowing down it's activity due to poor humidity/temperature ratios. Try bringing the temperature of your tank up to 75 degrees and the humidity as well. Offer him some peanut butter and some popcorn as well as ocean style salt water to see if that doesn't get him to be more active.
because that is in their nature. they dont really like to be watched if they dont know u that well, so it seems like they are sleeping just go in their shell when u are coming.
