Why does my son have blood coming from his bottom?

There are many reasons why blood may be coming from your son's bottom.

Firstly some of the symptoms are age related so it does depend to some extent on how old your son is. If the blood is bright red, fresh blood, then it most likely is coming from the lower bowel or near the anus. If it is blood that is embedded in the stool or partly digested, dark red or red/brown then it may have originated in the stomach, small intestine or esophagus. Blood being passed from the bowel may be temporary and of no significance medically or it may indicate a serious medical condition. It can be associated with constipation and the result of straining excessively to pass hard and sharp compacted faeces. An anal varicose vein or pile may bleed from time to time, especially when passing large hard stool. There are numerous medical conditions, diseases and injuries that have bleeding from the back passage as one of the main symptoms. In all cases of bleeding from the anus it is important to seek medical advice. If it's more than just a smudge on the underwear then either visit your local hospital or in more serious cases, call an ambulance.
