The moon can block the sun from view despite being much smaller than the sun because it is also much closer to us. In the same line of logic, you can look at a person on the other side of the room and block their head from view with your thumb, even though your thumb is much smaller than their head.

Why is a solar eclipse not visible on every place on earth?

A solar eclipse happens when the moon orbits in front of the sun, Also on earth one half would be day and the other would be night. so the night half of earth wouldn't be able to see it because the suns not out at night

What is the moon is on the earth shadow?

This is an eclipse of the moon.

When there is a lunar eclipse observed from earth what eclipse will be observed from moon?

From the Moon's surface, you would see a total solar eclipse.

Does a solar eclipse always look the same or is there different types?

There are three types of solar eclipse. The most well-known type is a total eclipse. In a total eclipse the moon completely blocks the sun from view so that only the corona is visible.During an annular eclipse the moon is farther away than in a total eclipse and appears slightly smaller in the sky than the sun. As a result the sun will appear to form a ring around the moon.During a partial eclipse the moon only covers a portion of the sun. A total or annular eclipse will only appear as such along a relatively narrow path. Most places affected by the eclipse will experience a partial eclipse. A partial eclipse may also be seen for a time before and after a total or annular eclipse.

What occurs when the sun moon and earth are in a direct line?

When the Earth is in between the Sun and the Moon it is called a lunar eclipse. The Earth keeps sunlight from reaching the Moon. The Sun light is kept from the Moon by the Earth, so a shadow is cast on the moon. There are three kinds of lunar eclipses, penumbral, partial, and total.Penumbral lunar eclipse - In a penumbral lunar eclipse, no part of the moon is fully covered by Earth's shadow, the shadow just dims part of the Moon.Partial lunar eclipse - In this eclipse, only part of the moon passes through Earth's shadow.Total lunar eclipse - The entire moon passes through Earth's shadow. The moon becomes a red/orange color. This is known as the "blood moon". A "blood moon" occurs because the Earth's atmosphere filters in red sunlight and filters out blue light. This causes us to see a red moon. When the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun it is called a solar eclipse. The Moon is smaller than the Earth so the shadow only covers a part of the Earth's surface. There are four types of solar eclipses, total, partial, annular and hybrid.Total solar eclipse - In a total solar eclipse, the moon covers the entire sun. It can be very damaging to the eye if you watch the total eclipse without eye protection. This type of eclipse can only be seen from a very small area on earth about 160 kms (100 miles) wide and 16000 kms (10000 miles) long.Partial solar eclipse - A partial solar eclipse occurs when only part of the Moon covers the SunAnnular solar eclipse - This eclipse happens when the moon is smaller in comparison to the sun. The Moon covers the centre of the Sun and a bright ring of sunlight can be seen.Hybrid solar eclipse - A hybrid solar eclipse is when an annular eclipse turns into a total eclipse.

Is the moon closer during an annular eclipse?

No. During an annular eclipse the moon is farther away than during a total eclipse, which is why it appears smaller in the sky and cannot completely block the sun.

What is the moon is on the earth shadow?

This is an eclipse of the moon.

What are three different kinds of eclipse?

Total. The Moon totally covers the Sun.Annular. The Moon is in line with the Sun, but the distance between the two doesn't produce a total eclipse.Partial. The Moon only partially covers the Sun.There is also the hybrid eclipse where it shifts between a total and an annular, but these are rare.

What phrase is the moon when there is a total solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse only occurs when there is a new moon.

Why does are moon which is smaller then the sun produce a total eclipse of the sun?

To make it simple its because the moon is closer to us. Like, if u put your thumb in front of your face and your looking at a car from a couple yards away your thumb would seem larger.

In what phase of the moon can a total eclipse occur?

Solar eclipse (total or otherwise): at new moon. Lunar eclipse (total or otherwise): at full moon. -- Immediately after a Solar eclipse you get a new crescent moon appearing in the sky. Obviously therefore the eclipse happens at the point when the side of the moon that faces us is in total shadow - indeed during the eclipse we are covered by that shadow. -- Immediately after a lunar eclipse, as soon as the moon moves out of the shadow, it is full.

What type of eclipse would be seen on the moon if earth experienced a total lunar eclipse?

Why can only certain parts of the world see a total eclipse?

The people who see a total eclipse are in the moon's umbra, the darkest part of the shadow where it completely blocks the sun. The moon is much smaller than Earth is, and therefore its shadow is as well. Therefore only a small portion of Earth can be in the moon's shadow at a time.
