Saw dust is a decent natural insulator. Heap it on thick enough and it will act as thermos or a cooler.
Note that just like a cooler or a thermos this doesn't really makes a drink cooler, it only slows it down. As long as the surrounding temperature is above freezing the drink is going to become less chilled eventually. The only real way to keep it from becoming less chilled for a long time is to put it somewhere where the temperature is below freezing, like in a freezer.
Ice is kept in sawdust to insulate and slow down the melting process. Sawdust has low thermal conductivity, which helps maintain the low temperature of the ice by reducing heat transfer from the surroundings. This insulation property makes it an effective way to store and preserve ice for longer periods.
Sawdust mixed in water cannot be separated by sedimentation because sawdust particles are too light to settle quickly in water. The buoyant force acting on the sawdust particles is stronger than the gravitational force pulling them down, so they remain suspended in the water for a long time. This makes it difficult for the sawdust to separate and settle at the bottom through sedimentation.

Melting requires energy: the heat energy in your drink is used to melt the ice.
