In sicle cell disease, red corpuscles are shaped like sickles instead of being round. If they try to go through your capillaries too fast, they create a traffic jam and a pileup. They can not get through and take oxygen to your organs, especially your heart. When your heart can not get oxygen, you die. Medicine can control the shape of sickle cells so they will not pile up.
