Gawain is eventually killed in the attempt, but before he dies, he writes a letter to Lancelot apologizing to him and asking him to return to help Arthur. Lancelot does, but too late. Arthur manages to kill Mordred, and is mortally wounded in the fight. He hands his crown to Constantine the Third, and is taken to the Isle of Avalon to be healed, never to be seen again. Some also say Arthur was actually attacking Rome when Mordred ursurped the throne, but either way, the end is the same.
