not all soup makes you hot, if the soup is cold, it will probably make you cold. The reason hot soup makes you hot ,is because of something called convection. Convection is the process of heat being transferred from one substance to another.

It is not smoke that you see, but rather steam. The soup is MUCH warmer than the air around it, thereby causing you to see the heat rising. Just as you can see your own breath when you walk out into the freezing cold--your breath, as you exhale is MUCH warmer than the cold air around you.
