European influence had many horrible effects on Africa, including creating tension between the Rwandan groups known as the Tutsis and the Hutus. (Yes, that was actually what they were called.) When Belgium colonized Rwanda, they gave favor to the Tutsis. Once Belgians left, the Hutus started killing the Tutsis en masse in response. As well, once the countries that had conquered the area left, the governments were completely destroyed, and had to be restarted.
