it is where the eucharist is prepared. At the last supper, Jesus broke bread and used a metaphor to explain to all gathered that he isn't going to be around for much longer and that he is a sacrifice - "This is my body broken for you" "This is the cup of everlasting life". Then he told us to "do this in memory of me". So every mass we do.

Why do priests use altars?

.Catholic AnswerAn altar is like a table on which a sacrifice is offered to a god. That has been the definition since time out of mind. In the Old Testament, when they wanted to offer a sacrifice to God, the first thing that they did was built an altar. The Mass (or Eucharist) is the Sacrifice of the New Covenant. It is the sacrifice of Our Blessed Lord of Himself upon the Cross for our salvation. The sacrifice that a priest of the Catholic Church offers is the exact same sacrifice, it is not done again, but it is re - presented. Only once in all of history was this sacrifice offered in a bloody manner on a Cross. When it is re - presented, it is presented in an unbloody manner on an altar.

What does the Holy Cross have to do with confirmation?

First let us talk about conformation. This is when you are confirmed a member of the church of your choice. The cross has nothing to do with the confirmation except to remind you of the sacrifice our saviour made on your behalf.

Why do some churches refer to the altar as the table?

The altar in the Jerusalem temple in Jesus' day was used for sacrifice. The word 'altar' actually means 'place of sacrifice'. Sacrifice was deemed necessary in the Jewish faith to obtain forgiveness for sins and to be justified before God (i.e. be 'OK' with).Christians however, believe that Jesus died as the supreme sacrifice once and for all and so sacrifice of animals on an altar is unnecessary, and they put their faith in Jesus, and in what Jesus did, alone; Christians believe in Justification by faith in Him and not by what they can do to 'earn' favour with God.The Holy Communion service in Christian churches (or the 'Lord's Supper', 'Eucharist' or 'mass' depending upon the Christian denomination) is a sacrament commanded by Jesus Himself, where we eat bread and drink wine in remembrance of Him. In the Bible story, Jesus told his disciples that the bread they eat represents His 'body' given freely for them on the Cross, and the wine represents His 'blood' again freely shed for them, and that, whenever we eat and drink (in other words, every day) we are to remember Him and what He did for us.In the Roman Catholic Church, Orthodox Churches and some other churches holding to the Catholic view, the table at which the bread and wine at the Communion Service is called the 'altar'because they believe that at each Communion service (Mass) there is a representation of the one Sacrifice of Jesus.

Why do Catholics always portray Jesus on a cross?

To remind them of the sacrifice that Christ made for mankind. There is a misconception that His death on the cross constituted the atonement, when in fact the atonement was made in the garden of Gethsemane.

What story about Jesus does cross remind Christians of?

The cross reminds people that Jesus died for us on the cross to forgive our sins that we have done or will do. It also reminds us that Jesus was resurrected and went to Heaven to be with God, this also tells us that when we die, our sins will (hopefully) be forgiven and we will also go to Heaven and be with God.

Why is the cross put on the altar and where should it face?

Roman Catholic AnswerA crucifix (not a cross, a cross with a corpus on it) is required by the rubrics (the rules for saying Mass) for the celebration of Mass. It may be on or near the altar. Normally it faces the celebrant (the priest celebrating the Mass).
