I am a Five Mile Prairie resident in Spokane, Washington. I can tell you that the "prairie" sits 3-400 feet in the air on top of a geological mesa. The mesa contains large volcanic basalt formations that apparently survived many previous floods and glacial melts. It has its own aquifer that feeds the remaining private wells. A large layer of clay-like soil holds a shallow water table, which causes frequent instances of flooding to homes and property. The prairie was recently designated as the heart of the "Five Mile Watershed" in an effort to protect how it integrates with the aquifer.
