They get very little calories from the bamboo they eat. That makes them eat many hours per day and they sleep a lot. Also, because they can't lay down much fat, they can't hibernate through the winter as other bears do. Studies have shown that they do not have a taste for umami (savory) so meat is not favored by them at all.
