A hurricane gets it's energy from warm sea water. The farther north you go, the colder the ocean is, so by the time a hurricane works it's way up to Canada, the cooler water has caused the storm to lose strength. The warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic farther south on the US coastline provide fuel for the storm.
