A significant portion of Russia's landmass is nonarable land, meaning land that is not fit for farming. Because of this, those parts of the country generally have few if any people living in them, which makes the overall population density lower. The United Kingdom doesn't have large uninhabited areas like that.
Probably because our welfare system is a magnet for every other country in Europe - and we (apparently) don't really seem to be able to refuse anyone 'claiming asylum !
The population estimate for Europe in 2011 is 816,426,346. The population estimate for the United Kingdom in 2011 is 62,435,709. Since some time has passed since these numbers were estimated, both would be higher today.

Russia has a population of 142,000,000 and an area of 6.5 million square miles, Canada has a population of 34,000,000 and an area of 3.8 million square miles, if you divide the population by number of square miles, you get the number of people per square mile. 142,000,000/6,500,000= 21.8 people per square mile for Russia. 34,000,000/3,800,000= 8.9 people per square mile in Canada. Keep in mind that this is a general estimate, and in both Russia and Canada, there are areas of higher population density and areas of lower density. In Russia, the European area is far more densely populated, while anywhere east of the Ural mountains is generally far more sparsely populated. In Canada's case, the southern areas near the United States are far more densely populated than the northern ones.

Russia has a dense population primarily due to historical urbanization patterns, concentration of economic activities in urban areas, and government policies that encouraged people to live in specific locations. The European part of Russia has more favorable climate and resources, leading to higher population density compared to the vast Siberian regions.
