Why does the back hatch not open and the rear wiper does not work on my 2002 Trailblazer?

I don't know how to fix the main problem but if you climb in the back of the Blazer in the middle of the hatch you will see a little round plug if you pop this out use a flashlight to see inside on the right side there is a lever if you pull it toward you all the way you will hear it click then you can open your hatch and window.
