Why does the battery not stay chargedbattery and alternator test good wires leading to th alternator are clean looking and the only lights that come on are the check gauges light when the battery dies?

I'm assuming that if you leave you vehical over night or longer it goes dead, not while driving? check for a stuck relay or a glove box or trunk light left on.

If the battery is dead you will need a battery charger. If the battery is good and you have low amperage then you will need another alternator. Most parts stores will check it for you. If you are looking for MORE amperage then you would have to buy a larger amperage alternator.

The problem isn't your batter or alternator or starter then. Start looking into your fuel management system. Possibly your fuel pump, injectors, etc.

Insufficient voltage from the alternator would be typical. If you have a DMM or voltage meter, test the alternator. You should be looking at between 13.6 - 14.6 volts from the alternator... if you're getting less than that, your alternator's on its way out, and needs to be rebuilt or replaced. In a nutshell, your alternator isn't sufficiently recharging your battery, and running your car is draining the battery. It'll continue to run until the battery goes dead. In a newer car, you'll notice nonessential systems start to shut off (e.g., radio, power windows and seats, etc.) as the LVD (low voltage disconnect) kicks in for the sake of maximizing battery life to run essential systems. This is something you really don't want to wait on. Normally there are 3 things that can cause the battery to run down. It can be the battery itself has a dead cell which means you must replace the battery. It can also be you have a defective alternator which is not charging the battery. Another possibility is a parasitic drain on the battery. This can be caused by a light that is on somewhere. Could be a courtesy light, under hood or trunk light, brake like, etc. Can also be that you have a relay that is stuck on the vehicle some work. Any of these things will cause the battery to run down. Remove the negative cable from the battery and see if you can fully charge it with a battery charger. Let the battery sit overnight and check the charge in the morning. If the battery is dead it has a dead cell and must be replaced. If the battery is fully charged connect the negative cable back up and start the engine. With the engine idling check the voltage at the battery with a volt meter set to the 20 Volt DC scale. You should read from 13.5 to 15.5 Volts DC if the alternator is functioning properly. Any less and the alternator is defective. If both the battery and the alternator are good start looking for a light that is on or a stuck relay.
