The human brain , through evolution, has increased the number of foldings (gyri) in order to increase the actual surface available to support the neurons within it. Similar to the branching "tree" structure of the alveoli in the lungs, the number of neurons able to be contained and supported by the "white matter" is vastly increased by the presence of these convolutions.
