Why does the engine on my John Deere 14SZ walk-behind mower start easily run for a few seconds but then die if I don't continue pushing the primer button after it starts?

You may also want to check for a crack or pin hole in the gas line. There is a restriction of fuel flow to the carburetor. When you continue pushing the primer button, you are "forcing" the fuel through the restriction. The first thing to check is for a clogged fuel filter. The next steps would involve the carburetor settings and the throttle linkage.
