Because it's made in Britain, that's why. :)
pull out the fuse ----------------------------------- rotate your gauge lighting dimmer wheel all the way down ( to the right of your headlight switch ) that shuts off the interior lights so they won't come on when a door is opened
18 G has the larger interior diameter. Gauges are based on AWG ( American Wire Gauge ) So therefore the higher the number the smaller the outside diameter, the lower the number the thicker the outside diameter is.

That is correct. On 1987 and later 900s the dashboard lights come on whenever the ignition is switched to ON.
By any chance has your gauge panel dimmer wheel switch ( located to the right of your headlight switch on your dash ) been rotated all the way down ? That keeps the interior lights from coming on when the door is opened
There is a warning light on the dash that will come on, the dash may also start making the alarm noise depending on yerar and trim level.
Beside your headlight switch in the dash is your gauge panel dimmer switch ( Rotate the switch all the way up to turn on the interior lights )
