The idle speed on a 2001 Honda Civic is adjusted through the idle air control valve. The valve is located behind the intake manifold. Open the cover using a screwdriver and tighten the valve to lower the idle.
What engines are they? If they are both D-series or bothe B-Series they will interchange.

The idle air control valve is what is being tightened. If the valve is tighten and the idle is still erratic there is a leak somewhere. Take the IACV out and have it cleaned. Also check the vacuum lines on the car.
You might need to change the fuel filter.
