The lyrics to the current version of "Anchors Aweigh", include the term "Roll out the TNT". By that time, TNT had replaced Explosive B (used in WWI) in Naval artillery shells/bombs for both shipboard and shore use (they're still in use today). The Germans were the first to use TNT in naval armor piercing rounds, and they proved extremely effective against British capital warships. By the '20's, most major navies had either converted or were in the process of converting to TNT for their artillery rounds.
"Roll out the TNT" in effect means "Roll out the shells" for naval combat. The verse was added during a time when naval gun combat was still a major part of naval strategy. It is still used today because the U.S. Navy, like most older navies, is big on Navy heritage and tradition.
Besides "Roll out the TNT" just sounds better lyrically than "Roll out the Shells". Shells could mean anything, including walnut shells for 3 Card Monte.
The National Anthem was written by Francis Scott Key in 1812. He was inspired to write the song after witnessing an attack on Fort McHenry by the British Navy. The fort received a severe pummeling, but survived with the American flag still flying overhead. Key's Star-Spangled Banner was adopted by the U.S. Navy in 1889, and officially declared the national anthem in 1931.
