The book "Slavery Nation" by Alfred Blumrosen argues that the American Revolution was triggered by the desire, principally by Southern plantation owners, but also by Northern merchants, to maintain slavery. In 1771 an English high court formally recognized that slavery was illegal ("Somerset case"). The War of Independence was largely fought to prevent the liberation of slaves in the American colonies.
