Why does the pope wear rings?

There is no special stone required, I believe that is up to each individual bishop. Up until Pope Paul VI revised the Devotions and Prayers that were enriched with an indulgence, there were a series of indulgences for kissing the bishop's (or the Pope or a Patriarch) ring. It is an old form of showing respect for the office of the Bishop. In other words, you are showing respect for Our Blessed Lord by showing respect to his appointed representative.
