The president lives in the White House because it is the best situated to provide the security required to protect the president, his family and his staff. The White House is not just a residence. It is where his office, the Oval Office, is located. It is also the location for most of his staff's offices. Centralizing all of these people in one building makes it easier for the Secret Service to provide the high-level security required.

People surely expect the president to live in the White House and it is hard to know what reaction a refusal to live there might provoke - I do not think it would be good!
