The president has to deal with a huge variety of issues and problems. The federal government is now involved with nearly every aspect of American life and it is the President's responsibility to oversee it all. Most of the advisers do more than offer advice. They perform a large variety of work on behalf of the President. They can take care of many problems without taking up the time and energy of the President.

The executive branch of the US government is headed by the President. Below him are the 15 cabinet members who each run their department. There are hundreds of workers , all over the US, in these departments. Many are civil service employees.

While departments were originally intended to be the largest and most important of government bureaucracies, many independent agencies are larger in terms of both staffs and budgets than many departments.
