The body needs oxygen because without it, cells cannot function. The respiratory system brings in oxygen to the body, and it is circulated throughout the body via the blood in the circulatory system. The oxygen is a key ingredient in many cell processes, and without it, the body would fail.

Oxygen is required for many processes in the body including making energy.

Cellular respiration requires oxygen to ensure the proper functioning of the mitochondria. The simple answer is that the oxygen atoms act as electron and proton acceptors. NADH and FADH (products of the citric acid cycle) are processed in the mitochondria by removing the hydrogen atoms (electrons and protons) and combining them with oxygen form water molecules H2O. the mitochondria process the NADH and FADH to produce ATP energy. Each NADH produces 3 ATP. Each FADH produces 2 ATP. To keep this process happening non stop the H on NADH is removed and combined with oxygen to form water

The body needs to take in oxygen and transport cells for tiny little organelles called mitochondria. There are three phases of cellular metabolism: glycolysis, the Krebs Cycle (citric acid cycle), and electron transport chain. Glycolysis and the Krebs cycle are anaerobic, electron transport chain is aerobic. Long story short, oxygen diffuses into cells and makes its way to the mitochondria where hydrogen is being passed down a concentration gradient inside the mitochondria and massive amounts of ATP (energy) is being produced. At the end of the electron transport chain, oxygen binds with 2 hydrogen (hydrogen is extremely volatile in solution, as it is the entire basis of Ph) causing the byproduct of the ETC energy producing system to be H20, or water.

And that's the entire purpose of us breathing in oxygen.

If you are talking about Red blood cells then they don't need oxygen because they do not have a nucleus or mitochondria, therefore cannot conduct aerobic respiration.

They just bind to oxygen to transport it in the body without the red blood cells using the oxygen up itself.
