Why does the speedometer on my 1998 cavalier drop a few MPH after some occasional shifts to higher gear? I.E. 3rd to 4th gear, speedometer would drop from 35 to 30 mph, without the vehicle speed changing, then go back up to vehicle speed.
YOUR SPEED SENCER IS STARTING TO GO its located on the side of your transmission
You must drop the gas tank
If you drop the glove box door you can usually see it.
CHANGE YOUR OIL NOW AND EVERY 3000 MILES!
I would say a whole day, considering you have to drop the fuel tank, find enough space to drop the tank, and then get it back up there. Not a fun job to do.
If the speedometer is erratic or not working then it is the speed sensor. If that is good then try replacing the fluid and filter. Make sure, if you have this done by a shop, that they drop the pan and change the filter. Some will not unless requested.
