So if the concentration of the molecule is higher outside the cell it can enter by diffusion. This is the movement of particles against their concentration gradient (ie from a low to a high concentration), using energy provided by the cell (ie ATP produced by respiration). So if a molecule is at a higher concentration inside the cell it can only be absorbed by active transport.

Water Movement across a cell membrane is called Osmosis. And it is dependent on the concentration of ions on each side of the cell membrane. If the concentration is higher on the inside of the cell water rushes in to dilute the ion concentration and get it to equal the outside concentration of ions and this is called hypotonic. If the concentration is higher outside the cell water will rush out of the cell to help dilute the concentration outside the cell and get the two concentrations to become equal and is called hypertonic.
