Why does the temperaure gauge of a 1999 ford contour stay in the hot position all of the time?

I had the same thing happen on a 1998 Ford Contour se and it was the water temperature sensor. If you unplug it and the gauge gos all the way to cold, then you plug it in, and right back to hot, its surely the temp. sensor. All that you will have to do then is go to the lcal parts store, buy one, unscrew the old one and screw the new one in and walla.
See if the fan is working, if it is, it could be the thermostat.
