One cause of heel pain is called, "Plantar fasciitis." It is an inflammation of the fascia of the foot that is attached to the heel. It is often relieved by stretching the big tendon on the bottom of the foot, especially right in front of the heel. The sole of the foot is called "Plantar" in the medical field which is based upon the Latin word for the sole of the foot. Some people roll the bottom of their foot on a ball, say, the size of a golf ball. Leaning far forward and leaning on something and slowly stretching the heels down toward the floor is helpful, too. Good arch supports in the shoe helps stretch the plantar tendon, as well. You can take a couple of Ibuprofen a couple of times a day to help relieve the inflammation in your heels, but do not do this for more than a few weeks at a time. There are elastic supports that you wear on your foot at night that help raise the arch of your foot and allow the fascia to stretch and loosen, you can also use a short piece of "Ace Wrap" to provide the support. If you stand close to a wall with your toes on the wall where you can gently push against the wall with your foot, it will stretch the same fascia. When you stretch any muscle or tendon, do it gently and hold in the stretched position for at least 30 seconds. Another common cause of heel pain is a bone spur that may need to be surgically removed, or sometimes shoe orthotics can be worn to relieve pressure on the bone spur.
